Harry is sniper bait.

Based on a true story, marine wireman Harry Klapheke struggles through double duty in one of the bloodiest locations of World War II. When his buddies dig in for the night, he and his heartwarmingly dim-witted pal leave the relative safety of the foxhole to string communication wire in Okinawa's merciless landscape. Relying on grit, ingenuity, and humor, Harry and his cohort maneuver through Japanese snipers' crosshairs and fight the grasp of combat fatigue.

The brutal biography The Voice of Love Company will grab you by the scruff of the neck and pull you deep into combat where you'll live the adventure, horrors, and brotherly bonds that war creates. Some describe this tale as Holden Caulfield tagging along with Robert Leckie if he'd been in the Pacific Theater.

Plunge into this graphic survival story today.

Harry was my great uncle. While my family had visited him and Hody many times during my youth, it wasn't until the summer of 2005, when I was in my 40s, that I spent a lot of time with him. I stayed with him for several weeks while my dad was hospitalized in Louisville.

The author captured Harry's soul and spirit. I laughed out loud at the "BS Hospital" comment in the story when Harry couldn't get a bourbon in the hospital at Christmas. That was the character I knew.

More importantly, Harry was a family man. His family, both during the book, and into his later years was extremely important to him. Starting in 1980 (I first attended in 1985), the Klapheke family reunions gathered at his house during the Saturday of the weekend. The times spend there were some of the best family events of my life.

The book itself was a page turner for me. While it took me over a year to get started on it, once I did, the book was hard to put down. My delay had allowed me to see "Hacksaw Ridge" which gave me a lot of visuals while reading about Harry's time on Okinawa.

I was amazed at the conditions that Harry and the other soldiers on Okinawa endured. Thank God for his generation and what they did for us in the US.

The Voice of Love Company A Marine Wireman Odyssey in The Pacific eBook Daniel Klapheke Reviews

Good story told from a veteran's perspective written by his grandson. Very detailed and thorough description helping make the experience real.
Great read for all history buffs.
Met Harry at author's wedding and found him to be lively and pleasant.
Fantastic writing, Daniel!
Execlently written account of the harsh conditions and all issues the soldiers, marines, and sailors went through in the pacific of WWII. Great book to any military historian or anyone that would like a view of how it really was over there and what all our American heroes went through.
Although I never heard my father talk about his WWII experiences, I thought I could somehow imagine how hard his service was. I was wrong. This book's description of Okinawa is more than any of us could have ever imagined. It's so sad any human beings had to endure these conditions. WWII veterans would love this read, as I did as a veteran's daughter.
OUTSTANDING storytelling. You are right there, with the characters, experiencing some of what WWII was like. Highly, highly recommended if you are interested in war reading. This is so well written and unique- I can see this becoming a movie. Thank you for your incredible service.
This is a compelling and engaging story of a group of Marines during the war in the pacific. Written by the grandson of the main character, the book is a close up and personal view of what our parents and grandparents sacrificed for the sake of future generations. Graphic and realistic war violence is balanced by the moments of humor in the midst of almost unbearable savagery. You will never forget Harry Klapheke Sr. and his buddies. At the end of the book an afterword tells us the fate of the main characters and reminds us that the war continues long after the last battle. Well written and researched and well worth reading or giving as a gift.
Daniel Klapheke is a wonderful storyteller. While this is a story of incredible struggle and the brutality of war, it is one that we should never forget. The book can best be described as biographical fiction. The author uses years of research to craft a story of his (real life) Grandfather, who served as a Marine Corps Wireman during the Okinawa campaign in World War II. The story is told from both the perspective of the Marine and his wife as they faced the reality of the War from both sides of the Pacific. The author does a great job of lightening the mood of the text through stories of camaraderie between the main character and his fellow soldiers. Well worth reading, and God bless all men and women who have served our Country!
